Seoul Spacation
AHC Spa launches its new forest-inspired Gangnam flagship location designed by local studio FLYmingo
An oasis in the heart of Seoul’s dense Gangnam district is one way to describe the interiors of AHC Spa’s new flagship location, not least because the concept of a lush forest was the inspiration for its design. Local design studio FLYmingo, whose office is on the opposite side of the Han River, was responsible for conceptualising an immersive, transformative space.
In light of the increasing need for a space to retreat from the harsh reality of the pandemic situation, ‘spacations’ are becoming a popular counterpart to the staycation. A scheduled getaway, even if in one’s home city, with the purpose of healing the body and mind may seem indulgent, but can have profound effects on stress levels, productivity and creative output.
Taking visual cues from the colours, shapes and textures of sand dunes, the ocean shore, a calm, secluded cave and a lush forest, the FLYmingo team conceived a sequence of corresponding spaces designed to aid the process of mental relaxation and rejuvenation.
This design narrative extends to the materials, furniture design and small details. For example, acrylic display tables cast shadows that mimic water ripples, while the crystal light feature is designed to resemble rain drops. The sound of flowing water can be heard throughout, and a glass-covered water feature gently leads guests from one zone to another.
In all, AHC Spa’s new flagship location articulates the brand’s updated identity and aims to reintroduce spa culture into modern lifestyles.
