Shades of Grey
Swathes of fair-faced concrete, white paint and warm timber characterise this serene Taipei apartment, realised by local firm CA Design. Designer Cheng Hao Chien shares more about the project
Design Anthology: Can you tell us about the client and their brief?
Cheng Hao Chien: The client saw our work online and reached out to us. They enjoy a kind of industrial minimalism, and they don’t like too much decoration in the home. They hoped that their space would be different from the interior design generally seen in Taiwan.
How did you approach the project?
Focusing on the living area, we opened the plan up and got rid of the standard wall-mounted television, and designed an open display bookcase on the feature wall instead. We selected loose furniture pieces that allow the living room to be reconfigured according to the family’s needs.
We retained the building’s original fair-faced concrete and offset it with light wood, white walls and a FENIX matt surface for a warm, relaxed atmosphere, and the palette of timber and white walls is repeated in the master bedroom.
Do you have a favourite element or design detail in the architecture or interiors?
We enjoy using FENIX matt materials in many of our project, since the low level of reflection creates a really calm, soft atmosphere.
