The globally renowned fair Maison&Objet is presenting two exhibitions in December alongside the DesignInspire showcase

Global design fair titan Maison&Objet celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and what more appropriate a time to make its first foray into Hong Kong? In early December, the fair is set to unveil dual showcase events: Maison&Objet Design Factory and Hong Kong Design on Stage at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Sponsored by Hong Kong’s Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA), the two events will be presented at the DesignInspire fair, an annual showcase that aims to promote the city’s culture and creativity.

Spanning 1,000 square metres, Maison&Objet Design Factory will showcase the latest approached in conscious design, specifically circularity, sustainable materials and end-of-life solutions. The exhibition is presented across five zones. Nature, the Muse!, curated by Chinese designer Jiang Qiong’er, brings together French and Chinese artisans to explore the intersection of heritage and modern design. Conscious Staging, curated by French studio Normal Studio, imagines the ideal room, consciously designed. Precious Matters, curated by Pauline Vidal and Quentin Hirsinger, founder of Materi’O, invites visitors into a garden space where they can explore a selection of materials chosen for their innovative properties. Shades of Sustainability (Chromo Sapiens), curated by Uchronia for French Design, presents 13 innovative sustainability-focused design pieces by a group of French studios. Terra Cosmos: spaces full of future promise, curated by Elizabeth Leriche, offers an inspiring tribute to the universe and planets.

Across the zones, Maison&Objet Design Factory will bring together more than 120 different brands and designers representing eco-friendly practices from Asia and Europe, as well as 21 world-renowned artisans embodying excellence in the fine crafts.

Hong Kong Design on Stage is presented in partnership Alliance Française de Hong Kong, and features ten Hong Kong-based designers in a pavilion that forms part of the DesignInspire show. The format replicates the successful presentation at the flagship fair in Paris in September 2024, and aims to foster exchanges between international brands, designers and design enthusiasts, so as to promote enhanced, responsible urban lifestyles.

Chosen through a competition that highlighted sustainable design principles, the eight designers and studios featured include product designers Studio Yellowdot, Studio-Ryte, Hintegro Limited, Green & Associates, @StreetsignHK and Monica Tsang Designs Limited, while the interior design category presents MLKK and BEAU Architects. Alongside these emerging designers, master designers Otto Ng of LAAB and Michael Young, who collaborated on the display pavilion, will be present.

Designed by the creative team at LAAB, the pavilion embodies a circular theme that symbolises unity and harmony, in a bid to both highlight the works of talented designers and inspire meaningful conversations about conscious living.

The two events represent Maison&Objet’s aim of highlighting the importance of innovative design solutions in shaping the future of Hong Kong and Asia. The exhibitions take place alongside other design events at HKCEC, such as Hong Kong flagship Business of Design Week, making the week a must for designers and design enthusiasts alike.

Date: 5–7 December 2024
