Shades of Green Define This Modern Family Apartment

Preview

Designed by local studio hoo, this family apartment in Hong Kong’s Mid-Levels pairs bright green hues with vibrant wallpapers and polished timber and metallic accents. Studio founder YC Chen shares more about the project

Design Anthology: How did you first meet the client?

YC Chen: The clients loved our previous work and got in touch about a potential collaboration.

Can you tell us about them and their lifestyle?

The clients are a couple with a three-year-old daughter and were planning on having another baby. They like simple, Nordic-style interiors and love cooking.

What was the brief to you for the project?

The brief was basically for the apartment to include three bedrooms, a spacious kitchen and a helper’s room.

What’s unique about the building and the location?

The 93-square-metre apartment is located in an old building in Hong Kong’s Mid-Levels. The layout was very efficient and all the walls could easily be taken down, so we were able to recreate the layout of the whole space.

How did you approach the project  — what design references did you try to incorporate into the space?

I wanted to use uplifting green tones and cheerful accent wallpapers to create a modern but rustic feel.

Please tell us a little about the material choices and the custom pieces.

We incorporated smoked oak flooring, walnut cabinets, feature wallpapers, pastel green walls, jade green subway tiles and patterned floor tiles in the kitchen. We custom-designed the display and shoe cabinet in the dining room with its brass trimmings.

Do you have a favourite element or design detail?

My favourite space is the dining area with its forest wallpaper, our custom cabinets, the bird-inspired pendant light and the green pastel walls. It feels like a forest from a children’s book. We couldn’t have created such an atmosphere without all of these elements.
