Curated by Hong Kong design studio Lim + Lu, the Hong Kong Design Annex is both a prelude to the upcoming SaloneSatellite Permanent Collection 1998–2024 exhibition and an intriguing event in its own right

Hong Kong will this November host the first overseas iteration of the SaloneSatellite Permanent Collection 1998–2024 exhibition, a sister event to the annual industry must-see in Milan. And in advance of the show, Hong Kong designers Vince Lim and Elaine Lu of Lim + Lu have curated the Hong Kong Design Annex, an exhibition and events series organised by Designworks Foundation that showcases some of the city’s emerging and innovative design talent.

‘We focused on local designers who demonstrate exceptional talent in various areas of design,’ says Lu. ‘For instance, we sought out designers who excel in sustainable practices, innovative material use and culturally inspired aesthetics. Each designer brings a unique perspective that reflects the vibrant design narrative of Hong Kong.’

The selection of designers Batten and Kamp, Studio Ryte, Florian and Christine, Julie and Jesse, Elaine Ng, Frank Leung, Editecture, Deft and Napp Studio & Architects is an ode to the city’s creativity and highlights local talent that pushes creative boundaries and resonates with the community. The designers’ contributions to the exhibition will include material research projects, innovative lighting and furniture, and tabletop products. ‘We aim to celebrate the rich diversity and innovation in Hong Kong’s design landscape,’ says Lu.

The Hong Kong Design Annex will take place in a bamboo pavilion conceived by Lim + Lu specifically for the event. Reflective surfaces both above and below promise to create a mesmerising interplay of light and shadow to backdrop the works on show. ‘As visitors walk through the exhibition, they will find themselves immersed in an “infinity bamboo forest”. The meandering path will lead them on a journey of discovery, unveiling the design pieces hidden within’’ says Lu. And of course, the choice of bamboo as a primary material pays homage to Hong Kong’s unique bamboo scaffolding, as well as reflecting the exhibition’s commitment to sustainability.

Alongside the exhibited pieces, a series of talks with the participating designers and architects will illuminate ideas related to contemporary design practice. ‘The talks will offer a platform for experts and creatives to share insights, exchange ideas and explore the evolving trends and challenges within the design industry,’ says Lu.

The Hong Kong Design Annex runs from 1 to 7 November 2024 at the Arts Pavilion, West Kowloon Cultural District.
