Realised by local interior design firm hoo, this relaxed apartment blends simple yet luxurious materials with classic mid-century style. Here studio founder YC Chen tells us more about the project

Design Anthology: Can you tell us about the client and their lifestyle

YC Chen: The client had been following our work for a few years and contacted us when she bought her new place. She is a bride-to-be and wanted to make it her dream home.

What was her brief to you for the project?

Her brief was to keep the 155-square-metre apartment’s original three-bedroom layout and include a master bedroom with a walk-in closet, a future baby’s room and a guest room.

How did you approach the project — what design references did you try to incorporate into the space?

The client is a big fan of our modern classic and mid-century designs, so that’s the style we went for. We also wanted the space to feel fashionable and Instagram-ready.

Please tell us a little about the material choices.

We used marble tiles, smoked oak flooring in a herringbone pattern, terrazzo and brass, as well as a patterned wallpaper for the master bedroom.

Which pieces are custom designed?

We custom designed the walk-in closet, which includes a feature to showcase the client’s bags. We also quite like the unique character of the master bathroom cabinets, which are wrapped with a brass border.

Do you have a favourite element or design detail in the interiors?

Overall, the materials we chose for the space makes it feel quite luxurious. I like the wallpaper in the master bedroom — not many people appreciate such dark colours and patterns. The moulding designs on the walls and cabinets also match quite well.
